Read the story to put the events in the correct order.

THE ANCIENTPORT C(Ty
This is the story of Ephesus, o ne of the largest and richest cities of the Roman Empire. It had beautiful temples, baths, theatres, and libraries. It was a port city, like İzmir today. Traders from all around the Medit erranean came to this harbour.
The most important building of Ephesus, The Library of Celsus, is one of the most famous Roman buildings today. It has four statues. The statues represent Wisdom, Goodness, Thought, and Knowledge. The library was built in the 2nd century.
There was a beautiful street connecting the harbour to the theatre. The street had shops on both sides. It had lights at night. In the Roman Empire, only Rome, Antioch, and Ephesus had streetlights. This street was built by the emperor Arcadius in the 5th century.
After the 6th century, the mud that the Küçük Menderes river carried, filled the harbour slowly. The city became smaller and smaller. In the end, people left the city and started living in the nearby town called Selçuk. Today the sea is eight kilometres away from the ancient harbour of Ephesus.
In the 19th century, Turkish and Austrian archaeologists started to restore the buildings in the ruins of Ephesus. For example, the Library of Celsus was not like what we see today. They rebuilt it in 1978. Ephesus is one of the most important and complete Roman cities that came through our day.
