Sonora was born to William and Ellen Smart at Jenny Lind, Arkansas in 1882. When she was five, the Smart family moved to West in search of better life and settled in Washington. When Sonora was 16 years old, her mother died while giving birth to her sixth child. Sonora realized that her father always faced to lots of hardships. Her father raised six children including the newborn on his own. Sonora questioned that if there is a day to recognize mothers then why there is not a day to honor fathers.
Many people often laughed and joked at Sonora’s idea. But nobody changed her mind and she began a sincere campaign lobbying for the cause of Father’s Day. Her hard work began to show signs of success and the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19,1910. So Father’s Day has become a hugely popular festival.
