Some people in the UK spend thirty to forty hours a week on the social networking sites. Are they addicted?
Well, it’s a lot of time, but you can’t call it an addiction.
But according to the press, many people just get lost in a social networking site. They forget to eat and they lose all sense of time. These people are always online, and they can’t do without using it.
I’m sure most people can easily stop using social networking sites if they want to. But if you have an addiction, it’s very difficult for you to give it up. Really?
Oh, yes. It’s the same as any other hobbies, like collecting stamps. When people like doing something a lot, they want to do it too much. But that doesn’t mean that they are addicted.
But the problem is that the social networks are not real. It’s not the same as a hobby like collecting stamps. These people treat the online world as the real world.
In fact, it is the real world. People chat with real friends, share real photos and organise real events. It’s just another way of social interaction.
So, there is no problem with the social networking sites.
No, I’m not saying that. There are advantages of social networks, and most of the users, over 1 billion people, live their lives.
Can there be problems with some people using them?
Yes, of course. People can spend too much time on those sites, ignore their families and work obligations, but it isn’t common. There are very few addicted people.
What can we do to avoid this addiction?
Be careful about the time you spend online. Set a time limit and stick to it, for example, an hour a day. And you shouldn’t be online when you should eat, work or sleep.
Thank you for your advice, Professor.
