Sixty years ago, music wasn’t as portable as it is today. Some people had radios, but they didn’t have digital media players which can store many songs. About eighty years ago, people first used machines to make and play audio recordings. They were very similar to today’s audio cassettes, but they were as large as a suitcase. The first cassette players were reel-to-reel machines which had two reels on it. The tape turned on these reels to make and play recordings. The biggest problem with using these reel-to-reel machines was that the tape would fall of the reels and easily get tangled. Finally, a smaller cassette came into our lives in 1962. It was in a plastic cartridge which could contain four tracks, but unfortunately, it was still large. Then an American manufacturer developed the 8-track cassette. Although the sound quality wasn’t so good, they became very popular in the US. Soon, millions of Americans took their favorite music wherever they went. 8-track cassettes didn’t live for a long time. 1972 was the year when people started to use compact audio cassettes. Later, CDs, DVDs and then Blu-ray discs became popular. Now, we use our tiny digital media players, smartphones or tablets to listen to our favorite songs.
